In the early hours of Tuesday morning, police responded to a chilling scene near the intersection of 240 Street and Dewdney Trunk Road in Maple Ridge. A man was found dead in a vehicle at a gas station, his body suffering from gunshot wounds. Witnesses reported hearing a rapid succession of gunshots just after midnight, with residents like Denise Harrington describing the sounds as quick, "pop, pop, pop" gunfire.
The shooting is believed to have occurred several blocks away, near 246 Street and 124 Avenue. Authorities quickly responded, administering first aid at the scene, but the victim was unfortunately pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has since taken over the case, with the Ridge Meadows RCMP assisting in the investigation.
This homicide comes just three weeks after another tragic incident in Maple Ridge, where a neighborhood dispute led to the deaths of a husband and wife and the suicide of their neighbor. The community has been left reeling from this latest outbreak of violence, and local residents like Harrington are concerned for the safety of their families. "I feel angry for my community… I feel scared for my children," she said.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information, including dash-camera footage from the night of the incident. "We certainly understand people's concerns following this incident," said Const. Tisha Parsons with Ridge Meadows RCMP. "We share their concerns and are committed to finding those responsible and bringing them to justice."
